Red-Bellied Woodpecker

A police officer caught two kids playing with a firework and a car battery.

He charged one and let the other one off.

Interesting Fact: A Red-bellied Woodpecker can stick out its tongue nearly 2 inches past the end of its beak. The tip is barbed and the bird’s spit is sticky, making it easier to snatch prey from deep crevices. Males have longer, wider-tipped tongues than females, possibly allowing a breeding pair to forage in slightly different places on their territory and maximize their use of available food.  ( https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-bellied_Woodpecker/lifehistory )

  1. i’ve always just seen them at a distance until a month ago, I looked out the kitchen window and saw red heads bobbing on the ground at the edge of the woods. Later I saw they’d been demolishing a tree stump. We’d had the sick tree cut, and felt guilty we hadn’t spent the money to have the stump removed. The carpenter ants were there. But they just softened up the stump for the woodpeckers. I’m glad the stump is providing all these meals for the wood[eckers. Hopefully the ants haven’t moved on to our house.
