Interesting Fact: Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) is celebrated to honor Mexico’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). Despite having a small band of fighters, the Mexicans were able to defeat the massive French army on May 5, 1862. People have this misconception that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day, but the fact remains that Mexicans celebrate their day of independence on September 16. I think you are mistaken. Mexico lost the battle at Puebla, but did eventually win the war with France.
It is a possibility, I am not 100% sure I got this information from a MSN websites given under the fact. I will do some research and change it. Thank you for bringing that up to my attention. 🙂
