Monk Parakeets

One day a man goes to a pet shop to buy a parrot. The assistant takes the man to the parrot section and asks the man to choose one. The man asks, ”How much is the yellow one?”
The assistant says, ”
2000.” The man is shocked and asks the assistant why it’s so expensive. The assistant explains, ”This parrot is a very special one. He knows typewriting and can type really fast.”
”What about the green one?” the man asks.
The assistant says, ”He costs
5000 because he knows typewriting and can answer incoming telephone calls and takes notes.”
”What about the red one?” the man asks.
The assistant says, ”That one’s
10,000.”
The man says, ”What does HE do?”
The assistant says, ”I don’t know, but the other two call him boss.”

Interesting Fact: Monk parakeets are the only member of the parrot family to build stick nests and to nest colonially. Their bulky nests provide a year-round home for the colony. The insulation these nests provide may be one reason why Monk Parakeets are able to survive cold winters. A single nest structure typically contains up to 20 nest chambers, and in extreme cases can house more than 200 nests. ( https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Monk_Parakeet/lifehistory )

  1. Love the photo…hard to see a nest in there for all of the mess of twigs really! đŸ˜€ Whereabouts did you take this?

    • Thank you very much. More then half of the nest fell to the ground that is why they were arguing. I took this photo in Edgewater, New Jersey, USA. Thank you very much for stopping by and taking an interest. Happy Blogging! đŸ™‚

      • Ah! I see. We used to have a pet Quaker/Monk Parakeet…he loved to argue too. Great personality.

  2. I saw my first Monk parakeet colony in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn years ago. They had a huge nest in the ornate Gothic entry (removed several times). It was amazing. Such a racket! They have spread to many other places since.

    • They are all over NYC and Jersey cost, it’s amazing how they adopted to that environment. Thank you very much for stopping by and sharing. Happy Blogging! đŸ™‚

    • Thank you very much, they are not really common to our area. But the rumor is that their origin to an escape from a damaged crate at John F. Kennedy Airport in the 1960s. It’s really amazing how they adopted to the climate. Happy Blogging! đŸ™‚

  3. Never heard of Monk Parakeets before. You caught and kept my attention and I’ve learned something new. Great blog.

    • Yes it is, but they build them next to the transformers to keep warm in the winter. Power companies are not a fan of them because sometimes they go on fire. Thank you very much for stopping by and checking out my work. Happy Blogging! đŸ™‚
