American Robin

Day 259 / 365

What did the cat say after eating two robins lying in the sun?

I just love baskin’ robins.

Interesting Fact: Robins eat different types of food depending on the time of day: more earthworms in the morning and more fruit later in the day. Because the robin forages largely on lawns, it is vulnerable to pesticide poisoning and can be an important indicator of chemical pollution. I always found it interesting that robins form large flocks in winter. In summer they split up to nest but the males still roost together at night.

I’ve noticed that robins will gather at the sound of a lawnmower engine in my neighborhood.

I’ll see them waiting on power lines and tree branches for the lawnmower to be put away.

Then they will land on the lawn to pick through insects and pluck tasty worms from the more easily accessible soil in the freshly cut grass.

They have associated the sound of then lawnmower with easy pickings.
