Interesting Fact: Juncos are the “snowbirds” of the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in and then retreat northward each spring. Some juncos in the Appalachian Mountains remain there all year round, breeding at the higher elevations. These residents have shorter wings than the migrants that join them each winter. Longer wings are better suited to flying long distances, a pattern commonly noted among other studies of migratory vs. resident species. I love Dark~Eyed Juncos, they are one of the few things I look forward to seeing in the winter. I refer to them as Little Junkies, I love to watch them scratching around in the dirt and then, when they leave, I know the hummingbirds are coming! Enjoyed the picture!

Funny and timely mention of the Turkey with the Junco. As I walked out between bouts of freezing rain, from farm to woodland, I saw both … perched in trees. A large ‘rafter’ of turkeys was overnighting in the treetops, and my approach startled them. I thought of hurling shouts and jeers at them, but “you’re all a bunch of turkeys” as they started, glided, alit and ran away before I could snap a pic seemed too obvious.
