Osprey

What does the man in the moon do when his hair gets too long?

Eclipse it!

Interesting Fact: Ospreys hunt by diving to the water’s surface from some 30 to 100 feet (9 to 30 meters) up. They have gripping pads on their feet to help them pluck fish from the water with their curved claws and carry them for great distances. In flight, ospreys will orient the fish headfirst to ease wind resistance. ( https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/o/osprey/ )

Is this at Heckscher? My daughter and I took pics of this bird but couldn’t figure out what it was. I wonder if you were the photographer I ran by?

I enjoy your work so far – only started looking yesterday – and this is an excellent example of how you add observations, insight and interesting facts to produce something much more valuable than a well-taken photograph.

Thanks for posting this photo. We have an osprey nest across from our house in SC, but can’t ever see them this well, even with binoculars. They fascinate me nonetheless!

Osprey have a unique adaptation in that one of their claws switches from forward to rear-facing when grappling pray. It also makes it very hard for then to let go if they ind they have grabbed too much fish. Every meal is a near-death experience for them.

That’s a nice picture. I guess since I’m Ospreyshire, I am compelled to comment on the bird that shares my musical/blogging moniker.

Another cool photo. Thanks for the interesting facts about Ospreys. I never knew that they were fishermen. 👍
